Dorthy I can relate to what you are saying. When my son was in modified
kindergarten I went to an autism group meeting and saw a film about
inclusion in Toronto. I was sold. I wanted inclusion for my son. I fought
tooth and nail for it and got it. It worked pretty well in kindergarten and
first grade. Second grade was a whole different story. Before the year I
was over I took him out of school. I felt like the kid that didn`t like the
way the way the other kids played so i took my ball and went home. I home
skooled(its a joke) for 4 years.I did finally get him potty trained but he
was so isolated I decided to send him back to school. By that time I knew
inclusion wasn`t his thing. He really doesn`t like noise and lots of
people. So he was placed in the "autism" program. It had 5 kids, a teacher
and 2 aides. I decided as long as he was happy and safe thats all I really
care about. He is in high school now and is still in a very small class
most of the day. His teacher loves him and he is her helper. I still
believe in therory inclusion is a great concept but in reality my son is
happier in his self contained class.I am happier too not fighting the
system all the time. We only have 3 years of school left. I plan on making
the most of them. Every holiday I make cookies for all the kids in special
ed and the teachers and aides. I figure I can catch more flies with sugar
than vinegar. The teachers actually like it when I come to school now.
Peace, love and cookies,
Tracy
